FA Vase progression with a full team performance

By Kieran Archer

Ryhope CW matched their best FA Vase run, progressing to the Second Round Proper with a 2-0 win over Ashton Athletic.

The visitors started well and almost had an early lead when an Adam Howard cross curled towards the right corner of the goal and forced James Winter to tip it over.

They had another good chance when the ball broke for Marcus Cusani inside the box but he fired wide.
Ryhope had their first shot on target in the 16th minute when a James Ellis free-kick forced Martin Pearson into a comfortable save.
And Ellis tested Pearson again with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

But Colliery Welfare started to get a hold of the game and got in front in the 24th minute.

Olly Hotchkiss played a fantastic ball over the defence and Ellis progressed inside the box before slotting into the bottom right corner.

The home side were given a chance to double the lead on the half hour when Howard tripped Ellis inside the box and a penalty was awarded.

Hotchkiss confidently converted the penalty into the bottom left corner.

Ashton Athletic almost halved the lead immediately but Winter made a good save from Adam Gilchrist’s strike inside the box.

The Yellows had Ryhope pinned back for a lot of the second half but could not find a way back into the game.

Winter was forced into another great save from point blank range in the 54th minute.

Ellis almost put the game to bed in the 60th minute when the ball broke to him on the edge of the box following Trewick’s challenge but his lob over the keeper was also narrowly over the bar.

Colliery Welfare had another great chance to put the game to bed on the break when Micky Rae played Robbie Bird through but Pearson managed to get a hand to the ball to take it away from him.

Ashton Substitute Chris Bandell was on the end of a cross at the near post in the 80th minute but his effort was wide from close range.
